Course structure:

The structure of this course varies, and class time can vary from 30-60 hours, either full time during the day or on weekends.

As well as this, a lot of study is required outside class (around 100 - 150 hours).

There is also a work experience component which goes for a total of 20 hours.

Course Content:

To qualify for the Certificate IV in TESOL, trainees must complete the following:

Twelve (12) Core Units
Two (2) Elective Units, and,
Practice Teaching

The names of the Units are given below with the *Nominal Hours associated with the Units provided below.

*Please note that the "Nominal Hours" are NOT the number of hours of attendance in classes. Nominal hours include in-class hours, self study, preparation for assessment and Prac Teaching.

Please also note that not all electives will be available to all Trainees on every Course. Trainees will be advised on a Course by Course basis what electives are available for their Course.

CORE UNITS - All units must be completed by all trainees.

TEL002 - Analyse language (15 hours)

TEL003 - Teach speaking (15 hours)

EL004 - Teach listening (15 hours)

TEL005 - Teach reading (15 hours)

TEL006 - Teach writing (15 hours)

TEL007 - Teach English grammar (15 hours)

TEL008 - Teach spelling and pronunciation (15 hours)

TAADEL401A - Plan and organise group-based delivery (20 hours)

TAAASS402A - Assess competence (15 hours)

TAAASS403A - Develop assessment tools (15 hours)

TEL012 - Develop resource files (5 hours)

VPC020 - Vocational Placement (20 hours)

Observation of an experienced teacher

Entrance requirements:

Trainees entering this course need to have a sound level of ability in written and spoken English Language usage as evidence by such things as:

- High school report results including those from Years 10, 11 and 12
- Written documents you have produced
- Evidence of having completed studies at a tertiary level
- Endorsements from a supervisor in your work place
- A result from an endorsed test of English proficiency**
- Your resume
- Communication in an interview (as evidence of spoken English ability)
- Any other evidence of good written and spoken English language ability
**An IELTS score of 6.0 if IELTS score is the ONLY indicator of ability

It's not necessary to have all of these things - just one or two are sufficient.

Prac Teaching :

As part of the courses each student must complete 20 hours of prac teaching to gain their certificate.

This involves 14 hours of observation of English classes run by professional teachers plus 6 hours of actual teaching practice.

The teaching practice will often take place at the same time as the observation - for example you may give a short exercise to a group that you have been observing for a while.

This prac teaching will often take place during the day during the week, so you must be able to commit to this. Exactly when you do your work experience can be negotiated between you and the teacher, but will also depend on availability.

Course Outcomes

Outcome A (for those with no previous teaching experience or qualifications):

Participants who do not have the qualifications or experience outlined under Outcome B below will be able to teach English in a less demanding and less professional capacity.

For example:

- To groups of visiting students on short term study tours
- To small groups of migrants in a supervised and limited capacity for the development of general English skills
- To overseas students on an individual tuition or small group tutorial basis
- Overseas in Institutions not governed by Australian standards where predominantly conversational English teaching is required (This is the case in most of Latin America and Spain).

Outcome B (for experienced or qualified participants):

A participant who already has a Tertiary Level degree and then also completes the Certificate IV in TESOL will find a wider range of employment opportunities.

For example, in Australia, the combination of a University Degree and the Cert IV in TESOL would be sufficient for teaching English at a National ELT (English Language Teaching) Accreditation Scheme (NEAS) accredited training centre (see www.neas.org.au/teachers/elt.php )

Potential Course participants should research the requirements for whatever Country, and particular employment opportunities that may apply.

The cost of the whole course including all training materials (5 text/work books in total) is $2200 inc. GST

A non-refundable $400 deposit is enough to secure your place.

FAQs

What happens if I can't make all the classes?

If you can't make all the classes on the timetable for a particular course there is no problem at all. All the necessary information to complete the course is contained in the workbooks that you will be given at the start of the course. You can complete the missed section at home and your teacher will be able to help you with any problems you encounter.

What is the difference between TESOL, TEFL and CELTA?

These courses are all basically the same, they are just slightly different standards.

I've seen courses online for only a few hundred dollars. What is the difference between these courses and yours?

This is a fully accredited course by the Australian government. It also includes 20 hours of prac teaching which online courses don't, and which English language schools all over the world will look for when reviewing your qualifications. This course will allow you to teach almost anywhere (see course outcomes above), whereas an online course won't give you an accredited qualification.

Do you offer a “job guarantee”?

A number of companies offer “job guarantees” for their TESOL courses, but we see this as unnecessary. Firstly, the requirements for actually getting a refund are quite strict (you usually have to apply for at least 30 jobs in a short period of time, and in countries such as China where you may not want to work), and secondly they’re unnecessary, as anyone with a TESOL certificate and who has English as their native language will almost certainly be able to find a job somewhere in the world (that’s why they offer the job guarantees – they know they’ll never have to actually honour them).
